Blues Pills / Riverbed live @ Piraeus Academy - Review

Riverbed

Έπαιξαν μεταξύ άλλων τα εξής από το “One Take”: Moonlight of my heart, Devil Woman, Breaking Ground και μια ωραία διασκευή στο “You keep me hangin’ on”.

Blues Pills

Η Elin Larsson κάθισε στα πλήκτρα για να αποδώσει μόνη της το “I felt a change”, με την μορφή (και τη φωνή) της Aretha Franklin και της Norah Jones να πλανιέται στο χώρο. Επέλεξαν την πολύ ταιριαστή διασκευή του “Somebody to love” των Jefferson Airplane και έκλεισαν μια πολύ καλή εμφάνιση με το “Devil Man”, μετά από μιάμιση ώρα επί σκηνής.

Setlist: Lady In Gold, Little Boy Preacher, Black Smoke, Bliss, Bad Talkers, Won’t Go Back, Elements And Things (διασκευή σε Tony Joe White), You Gotta Try, Astralplane, High Class Woman, Ain’t No Change, Little Sun, I Felt A Change, Gone So Long, Somebody To Love (διασκευή σε Jefferson Airplane), Devil Man.

English Version

The vintage sound of the Blues Pills has a lot of fans in Greece.  The rock of ‘70s and ‘80s is a beloved genre in Greece, so the sound of the Swedish band has found willing ears. Two albums, a fresh sound despite their love for previous musical decades, an interesting mixture of old blues/rock under a new look and a female singer and their proven ability in live shows set up the conditions for a great show.

Riverbed

At 20:20 the Greek band Riverbed got on stage. The venue was not packed yet when they started covering “Break On Through” gaining the crowd’s attention to continue with their songs for 40 minutes. A 4-membered band with one guitar and the singer playing the keyboards as well. They had a ‘70s classic rock and blues sound, showing their love for the Rainbow. Great work on vocals by the singer Apostolis Liapis, who showed his ability and technique a lot of times, earning the applause with his singing. They played between others the following songs from their album “One Take”: Moonlight of my heart, Devil Woman, Breaking Ground and a nice cover of “You keep me hangin’ on”. Great rock sound, that will not change the Music, but sounds very good. Classic rock fans should check them without hesitation!

Blues Pills

The Blues Pills got on stage at 21:30 with their music and their appearance coming straight from the ‘70s. The vintage sound and look (hair, clothes, belts) may refer to the past, but their music sounded totally fresh. The band started full of energy with the song “Lady in Gold” and showed from the first minute its intentions. The 4 guys of the band were quite still, but you couldn’t say the same for Elin Larsson. Elin got on stage barefoot and didn’t stop dancing, jumping and taking her favorite position lowering her legs, but mostly smiled. She proved that a female rock singer doesn’t need to put a “look me I am rocking” mask, but she can be sweet and smiling and yet rocking hard. Impressive, always moving around, had great communication with the audience even without words between the songs, made you watch her for her great voice and presence. In “Devil Man”, her performance was amazing, giving you the impression of watching a priestess summoning a spirit.

The rest of the band looked like a band from another decade, but all similarities stop there, as their music may be “old”, but their lyrics are dealing with modern issues (“Little Boy Preacher” for example). What surprised me is that despite the fact that their music is based on the ‘70s rock and blues, the audience was mostly young. The audience participated with every way it could: singing, clapping, sing-a-longs, showing the great bonding between the band and their fans. 19 years old Dorian Sorriaux, dressed as ‘60s-‘70s as possible, showed why he is one of the most talented and rising new guitarists, while the rhythm section of Zach Anderson and André Kvarnström galloped or created psychedelic blues sounds, with the help of the second guitarist/key player.

All this mixture of fuzzy riffs and colossal drumming and bass was glued together with Elin Larsson’s voice Όλο αυτό το μείγμα από fuzzy riffs και κολοσσιαία ντραμς και μπάσο έδενε με τη φωνή της Elin Larsson, creating an excellent result. Even the songs that the Blues Pill’s influences is more present, the band has the ability to keep a great idea but turn it into something completely different. The great sound engineering helped the band to present their music at its best.

They devoted “High Class Woman” to women due to the recent celebration of “Woman’s Day”. Elin Larsson without the band sang and played the keyboard on “I felt a change”, with the voice and presence of Aretha Franklin and Norah Jones wandering around. They chose the very matching cover of “Somebody to love” of Jefferson Airplane and closed a great live gig with “Devil Man”, after one and a half hour.

Setlist: Lady In Gold, Little Boy Preacher, Black Smoke, Bliss, Bad Talkers, Won’t Go Back, Elements And Things (Tony Joe White cover), You Gotta Try, Astralplane, High Class Woman, Ain’t No Change, Little Sun, I Felt A Change, Gone So Long, Somebody To Love (Jefferson Airplane cover), Devil Man.
