Depeche Mode live @ Terra Vibe - Review

Η Τετάρτη 17 Μαΐου ήταν μια μέρα ειδικών συνθηκών, με κακοκαιρία, βροχές και την απεργία των Μέσων Μαζικής Μεταφοράς να προσθέτει ένα κατακόκκινο κερασάκι στην τούρτα. Όταν, όμως, μιλάμε για μια συναυλία των Depeche Mode, όλα αυτά μπαίνουν στην άκρη και ο κόσμος δίνει το «παρών», ακόμα κι αν χρειαστεί να περπατήσει (ή κολυμπήσει) μέχρι την Μαλακάσα. Στα θετικά ότι οι υπεύθυνοι είχαν ενημερώσει από νωρίς ότι η συναυλία θα διεξαχθεί κανονικά, οπότε δεν υπήρχε αμφιβολία για το συγκεκριμένο θέμα. Μετά από μια σχετική καθυστέρηση στη διαδικασία εισόδου, η οποία επιταχύνθηκε από ένα σημείο και μετά όσο πλησίαζε η ώρα των Raveonettes, μπήκαμε στο Terra Vibe, το οποίο ακόμα γέμιζε. Τα λίγα ταμεία που ήταν ανοιχτά έκαναν την προσπάθεια αγοράς μάρκας ίση με το να βρεις στην Κυψέλη πάρκινγκ τη Δευτέρα στις 9 το πρωί. 

The Raveonettes

Οι Raveonettes βγήκαν στην σκηνή στις 20:10 και για τα επόμενα 40 λεπτά προσπάθησαν να «ζεστάνουν» τον κόσμο, πριν την εμφάνιση των Depeche Mode. Το ντουέτο από τη Δανία επέλεξε τα πιο ήρεμα και όχι τόσο τα fuzzy και noisy κομμάτια τους, κάνοντας τον κόσμο να χορέψει και να κουνηθεί με το “Love in a Trashcan” και με τη Sharin Foo να μας ευχαριστεί στα ελληνικά. Στις 20:50 κατέβηκαν από τη σκηνή και οι τεχνικοί ξεκίνησαν να ετοιμάζουν την σκηνή για τους Depeche Mode.

Στις 21:30 έσβησαν τα φώτα και από τα ηχεία άρχισε να ακούγεται το “Revolution” των συμπατριωτών τους (The Beatles), ενώ τα πόδια από το εξώφυλλο του τελευταίου τους δίσκου (“Spirit”) άρχισαν να «περπατάνε» στο video wall. Οι Depeche Mode βγήκαν στη σκηνή μέσα σε επευφημίες και ξεκίνησαν με το “Going Backwards», για να πάνε όντως προς τα πίσω δισκογραφικά και χρονικά. Το σακάκι του David Gahan άντεξε ένα μόνο κομμάτι πάνω του και στο δεύτερο είχε ήδη μείνει με το κλασικό αμάνικο γιλέκο του. Μια τεράστια ράμπα που έφτανε μέχρι μπροστά δέσποζε στη σκηνή, ενώ και ο ήχος ήταν άψογος, επιτρέποντας να ακούμε πεντακάθαρα κάθε νότα από τις ηλεκτροπόπ μελωδίες των Depeche  Mode. O David Gahan αποδείκνυε εύκολα επί σκηνής πόσο καλός τραγουδιστής είναι με τη φωνή και την απόδοσή του, αλλά και ότι «το έχει» ακόμα, αφού δεν σταμάτησε να χορεύει ηδονικά, σε κάθε sexy νότα των DM. To “Barrel of a gun” με την αστερόμορφη κιθάρα του Martin Gore και το groove που έβγαζε έκανε τον κόσμο να αρχίσει να κουνιέται και τον Dave να μη σταματάει να χορεύει.  

Οι Βρετανοί στήριξαν τον τελευταίο τους δίσκο με 5 κομμάτια (“Going Backwards”, “So Much Love”, “Cover Me”, “Poison Heart”, “Where’s The Revolution”). Πιστεύω ότι το κοινό πιθανώς περίμενε περισσότερα από τα «κλασικά» τους κομμάτια, δεν είχε προλάβει να μάθει τα καινούρια, οπότε ίσως δεν έτυχαν της «υποδοχής» που τους άρμοζε, παρά το γεγονός ότι είναι αρκετά έως πολύ καλά. Οι γιγαντοοθόνες πρόβαλαν συνεχώς υλικό από 3 κάμερες βοηθώντας στο να έχουν όλοι εικόνα, ενώ σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις η κεντρική οθόνη πρόβαλε εξαιρετικά video που ταίριαζαν με το κομμάτι. Το video του “In Your Room” με το δωμάτιο πίσω, του “Cover Me” με τις σκηνές με τον Dave αστροναύτη και τα διαστημόπλοια, και του “Walking in my shoes” με σκηνές από τη ζωή ενός trans/cross gender ατόμου ήταν πραγματικά εξαιρετικής ομορφιάς και έδεναν απόλυτα με τα κομμάτια.  

O Martin Gore ανέλαβε τα φωνητικά, εκτός από το “Home”, που όργωσε τη σκηνή και οργάνωνε τον κόσμο κουνώντας τα χέρια σαν μαέστρος, του εξαιρετικού “Somebody”, αλλά και στην ακουστική εκτέλεση του “A Question Of Lust”. Διαφορετικό, αλλά εξίσου καλό, γεμάτο συναίσθημα, έκανε τον Dave να συγχαρεί και να φιλήσει τον Martin μετά το τέλος του κομματιού. Τα χτυπήματα στο drum kit με το σήμα της ελευθερίας δεν σταμάτησαν ούτε στιγμή, δίνοντας ρυθμό και συνοδεύοντας τις μελωδίες του Andy Fletcher. Ο ενθουσιασμός, ο χορός και η συμμετοχή του κόσμου στο “Wrong” έφερε το χαμόγελο και την υπόκλιση του Dave, αλλά και το «ευχαριστώ» του στα ελληνικά.

Από το “Stripped” και μετά ξεκίνησε και η βροχή (που πιστεύαμε ότι θα αποφύγουμε τελικά), κάτι που δεν πτόησε τον κόσμο, παρά το κρύο και την λάσπη, δημιούργησε όμορφες εικόνες με τις σταγόνες της βροχής να φωτίζονται και τους Depeche να νιώθουν σαν στο σπίτι τους. Οι (αγαπημένες) κινήσεις του Dave είτε με το σταντ του μικροφώνου είτε με το λίκνισμα των γοφών του είτε με τα ανοιχτά χέρια προκαλούσαν τον ενθουσιασμό του κόσμου και έδειχναν πόσο μεγάλος performer είναι. Αλλά και το κοινό δεν τον απογοήτευσε, όπως λένε οι στίχοι του “Where’s the revolution” (Come on people, you’re letting me down). Μπορεί στα νέα κομμάτια να ήταν «υποτονικό», αλλά σε όλα τα υπόλοιπα συμμετείχε με τραγούδι, χορό, χειροκροτήματα, κούνημα χεριών και ό, τι άλλο ζητούσε ο Dave. Στο “Never let me down” όλο το Terra Vibe κουνούσε τα χέρια του πέρα δώθε, στο “Enjoy the silence” τα χέρια υψώθηκαν στον ουρανό και στο “Personal Jesus” τον ανάγκασε να παραδεχτεί ότι «Είστε τόσο πολλοί. Είναι τόσο όμορφα».

Η πέμπτη επίσκεψη του συγκροτήματος στη χώρα μας (αλλά τέταρτη εμφάνιση) ήταν πάρα πολύ καλή. Το συγκρότημα ήταν σε «καλή φόρμα», ευδιάθετο και έπαιξε πάνω από 2 ώρες. Χαρακτηριστικό της ενέργειας που έβγαζαν ήταν ότι ενώ το κοινό ήταν με μπουφάν, ο Dave είχε ήδη ιδρώσει στο δεύτερο κομμάτι. Λίγο πριν το τέλος της συναυλίας, άλλος ένας Βρετανός καλλιτέχνης είχε την τιμητική του, με τον χαμογελαστό Dave να αποτίει φόρο τιμής με το “Heroes” στον άλλο μεγάλο David, τον Bowie. Όσα χρόνια κι αν περάσουν, όσες φορές κι αν τους έχεις δει, οι Depeche Mode είναι ένα συγκρότημα που θα σε κάνει να αψηφήσεις κάθε δυσκολία (ή απεργία) για να τους ακούσεις live και κυρίως για να περάσεις καλά.

Enjoy not the Silence, but the Music

Wednesday 17th May was a day of special circumstances, due to both the heavy rain and the strike on public transportation. But when a live gig of Depeche Mode takes place, everything seems like a minor issue and the band’s fans could even walk (or swim) to Terra Vibe Park, to listen to them. We should mention that we had full information about the concert and any chance of postpose was out of question. After some delay to enter the venue, we managed to get in just in time to listen to the beginning of the Raveonnetes’ set. Due to the small amount of open booths to buy beer etc, there were huge lines of people waiting.    

The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes got on stage at 20:10 and for the next 40 minutes they tried to warm up the crowd, before the Depeche Mode set. The Danish duo chose not to play their noisy and fuzzy songs, the audience reacted to the sound of “Love in a Trashcan” and Sharin Foo thanked us in Greek. At 20:50 finished their set and the DM road crew started preparing the stage for Depeche Mode.

At 21:30 the lights went off, the Beatles’ “Revolution” started playing from the speakers and the legs from their latest album’s (“Spirit”) cover started “walking” on the video wall. Depeche Mode got on stage under audience’s cheer and started with the “Going Backwards», so as to indeed go backwards to their discography. David Gahan kept his suit on only for one song, as in the second song he was on stage only with his legendary waistcoast.  One huge ramp was on stage, the sound was clear and perfect helping us to listen to every note of the electropop melodies of Depeche Mode. David Gahan proved easily with his voice that he is a great singer and that he still has “it”, as he danced and moved erotically to every sexy note of Depeche. “Barrel of a gun” with Martin Gore’s star-shaped guitar and its groove was the first time the audience danced, while Dave was moving to it.

The British band played 5 songs from their latest album (“Going Backwards”, “So Much Love”, “Cover Me”, “Poison Heart”, “Where’s The Revolution”). It’s my belief that the audience expected more from their classic hits, it had not the time to get used to them, so the songs did not excite it, despite the fact that they are pretty good. The huge video walls showed live streaming from 3 cameras, in the aid of everyone to watch. In some cases, the central video wall showed exceptional videos that matched the song, as “In Your Room” with the room in the background, με το δωμάτιο πίσω, “Cover Me” with Dave as astronaut and starships and “Walking in my shoes” with scenes of a trans/cross gender person’s morning. O Martin Gore sang “Home” while running all over the stage and rousing the audience like a conductor, “Somebody”, and the acoustic version of “A Question Of Lust”. A different, full of emotion interpretation that made Dave get on stage, give his regards and kiss him. The pounding on the drum kit decorated with the sign of liberty didn’t stop for a moment keeping the rhythm and accompanying Andy Fletcher’s melodies. Audience’s enthusiasm, dance and participation on “Wrong” made Dave to smile, bow and thank them in Greek.

The rain started pouring from “Stripped” and afterwards, but nobody bothered despite the cold and mud, and it created beautiful images as it passed before the stage lights, helping the band feel as home, due to the English weather. Dave’s (favorite) moves with the microphone stand, the hips’ shaking and his pose with the open arms made the audience go wild and showed his great value as a performer. Fans “never let him down”, as, despite being a bit tepid on the new songs, on all the others participated any way they could and did whatever Dave asked for. On “Enjoy the silence” you could see everywhere hands  and “Personal Jesus” made him admit that “You are so many. It’s so beautiful”.

It was the fifth visit of the band in our country (and their fourth appearance) and it was a very good one. Depeche Mode were in “good shape”, were happy to be there and played for over two hours. A great example of the band’s energy is the fact that the audience was wearing their jackets and Dave was sweaty since the second song. As the set came to its end, DM paid homage to another British artist and a smiling David Gahan sang another great David’s song (Bowie), “Heroes”. Despite the years that have passed and the times you have seen them, Depeche Mode is a band that will make you defy any difficulty (or strike in this case) to listen to them and have a hell of a time.
